Showing Numbers up to 10 000
In this section, I will learn how to show numbers up to 10 000 in the following ways:
- Base Ten Blocks (loaves of bread, slices, baguettes and crumbs)
- Breaking the number apart into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones
- Writing the number in words
What are some ways that I can show numbers?
Building Numbers with Base Ten Blocks When we are building any number, a great first step is to place it in a place value chart so that we know exactly what to build. We should do this placing the digits into the chart start from the right hand side so that we don't start in the wrong place. A great strategy is to look at the digit you want to build ten look up to see what place it is in in the chart as well as what block to make. From this chart, we know to build the following: 1 thousand cube 2 hundreds flats 8 ten rods 5 unit cubes Writing Numbers in Words Again, a great first step is to put your number in a place value chart. This way, we can see where each digit is in our place value chart. Now, take a look at each digit. Look above each digit and see where it lies in the place value chart. Now we can start putting together the words. There are: 5 thousands, 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 9 ones. In words, that's: five thousand two hundred twenty nine. Breaking the Number Apart / Expanded Form
For this way of showing a number, we should again place the number into a place value chart. We start on the left hand side and make out way over to the right. This way of showing reveals the value of EVERY digit in the whole number: 2 thousands, 4 hundreds, 6 tens and 3 ones. In expanded form, it's written like this: 2 000 + 400 + 60 + 3 |

Practice Activities
Choose one of the following activities to complete:
1) Using base ten blocks, show 3 different ways you can build 9 806. Hint: We could look at 9 806 as 98 hundreds and 6 ones.
2) Show how 903 and 9 003 are different and/or similar?
3) Show 4 different ways we can show the number 7 431. Hint: In this question, one way has already been shown!
