2D Geometry
In this section, I will learn how to:
- tell if two shapes are congruent (have the same shape and size)
- identify shapes that have symmetry
- create shapes that have symmetry
Two shapes are congruent, what does it mean?
These two hearts are not the same color and have different orientation BUT have the same size and shape. They are congruent.
|
These two arrows are the same shape and size BUT are not the same color. However, they are congruent.
|
These two stars are different sizes but are the same shape. They are NOT congruent.
|
The word congruent is a fancy Math word that just means that two or more shapes are the same shape and size. Keep in mind that if we have to objects that are the same shape and size but are turned or flipped, they are still congruent. To find out if two shapes are congruent, you can lay them on top of each other to see if they fit perfectly. Take a look at the video on the right to learn more:

If a shape is symmetrical or has symmetry, what does it mean?
Shapes that can be split into two EQUAL (same) pieces are said to have symmetry or be symmetrical. A line of symmetry shows where a shape can be split into two even pieces. Some shapes can have more than one line of symmetry. View the video on the right to learn more! |

Creating shapes that have symmetry
Creating shapes that have symmetry can be lots o fun. There are many ways but here are two ways to get you started: 1) Take a piece of paper and fold it in half. Trace HALF of the shape you want to create. Cut the shape out along the folded line. 2) Use a piece of grid paper to draw half of the picture. Use the squares on the grid paper to help guide you with the second half of the drawing. Take a look at the video on the right to learn more about creating symmetrical drawings and shapes: |

Practice Activities
Choose one of the following activities to complete:
1) Name OR draw 3 symmetrical shapes that can be found in our everyday world.
2) Are congruent shapes part of symmetrical shapes? Explain using words and drawings.
3) How do you know if two shapes are congruent? Explain using words and drawings.
